1. Voorzitter van de ESWI, een lobbyclub van Big Farma. Via deze functie staat Osterhaus in direct contact met GSK en Novartis, de producenten van het Nederlandse vaccin (NIET DISCLOSED)

Bekleden van vijf functies binnen de WHO die na te lezen zijn op zijn offciele lijst van nevenfuncties. Deze functies zijn echter extreem alarmerend omdat de WHO leading is in het aanwakkeren van de hysterie en het verplicht voorschrijven van het vaccin. “Precompetitief onderzoek bestaat in onze visie niet. Wij zijn
vanaf dag 1 met een product bezig. Toch hadden we twee subsidies
aangevraagd en die kwamen zelfs als beste uit de bus. Maar toen ze
in ruil een deel van onze IP-opbrengsten eisten, waren we er snel
klaar mee. Dat vraagt verder geen enkele van onze subsidiegevers.
Vroeger verstrekte Senter subsidies waar je als bedrijf mee uit de
voeten kon. Nu is daar te veel bureaucratie. De industrie is ook in
de minderheid bij TI Pharma en de focus lijkt vooral gericht te
zijn op het binnenhalen van extra geld voor de universiteiten.â€
Hoe kan de overheid naar jouw mening bedrijven beter stimuleren?
“Voor een vaccin, bijvoorbeeld een tb-vaccin, bedenken wij een
pad en eigenlijk willen we daar geen millimeter van afwijken.
We werken alleen samen met universiteiten en onderzoeksinstituten
die het interessant vinden daarop in te haken, zoals de
groep van Ab Osterhaus in Rotterdam, met ID-DLO in Lelystad
en met veel Amerikaanse universiteiten.
De overheid kan ook meedoen, maar dan liefst op de
Amerikaanse manier. Wij halen veel subsidies uit de VS binnen.
Als de Amerikanen een malariavaccin willen, bellen ze ons met
de vraag: wilt u geld om uw vaccin sneller te ontwikkelen dan u
van plan was? En dan hoef je vervolgens alleen elk jaar te vertellen
hoe ver je bent opgeschoten.
We hebben onlangs weer 30 miljoen dollar van ze gekregen
om een ebolavaccin te ontwikkelen. De Amerikanen willen dat
hebben voor het leger.

The SARS monkey study was a case in point–and vintage Osterhaus, some say. Once he had received the virus from Hong Kong virologist Malik Peiris, Osterhaus decided there was no time to consult an animal ethics panel about the trial, as required by Dutch law. Instead, the director of his university’s animal lab got a top official at the Dutch health department to sign off on the study, on the condition that the researchers seek approval after the fact. The move rankled animal-rights activists and a member of parliament; health secretary Clémence Ross-van Dorp later conceded it had not been handled adroitly. But Osterhaus says he would do it again. “At that point, we were still having lengthy discussions in the WHO network about what caused SARS,” he says. “This really needed to be done as fast as possible.” He concedes he also wanted to beat rivals to the finish. He did: Nature published his paper–his 499th–about the monkey study on 15 May.
A member of countless national and international panels, he seldom declines requests for interviews and has been on television at least 20 times since early March. “Ab loves to hear himself talk,” says Fouchier, “but he does it really well.” Colleagues say Osterhaus’s energy and personality are an asset to the bustling lab–but they can be a problem, too. Younger scientists have trouble establishing themselves under his towering ego. Osterhaus, for instance, has long insisted on being last author–a position indicating seniority–on many papers leaving his lab. His associates don’t dispute his involvement in much of the work, but they need the credit. “We’ve fought over that, and pretty hard, too,” Fouchier says. Several compromises have been worked out; several senior researchers in his lab now grant Osterhaus last authorship on every other paper he played a role in. Rob Gruters, who does most of the lab’s work on HIV, compares his boss to Eddy Merckx, a legendary Belgian bicyclist nicknamed “The Cannibal” because his searing desire to win eclipsed a generation of his colleagues. “Ab wants it all,” says Gruters. Still, he says, Osterhaus is fun to work with. He appreciates his staff members’ ideas and gives them freedom to pursue their interests–even if they’re offbeat.
Osterhaus has two companies to commercialize his findings; most of the revenues are cycled back into the lab, he says, where they help pay for the wildlife studies or, for that matter, last month’s Caribbean junket. Last year, he licensed the worldwide rights to develop vaccines and antibodies to the human metapneumovirus to MedImmune, a biotech in Gaithersburg, Maryland. The down payment alone reeled in $10 million–most of which goes to the university. And yet he’s not satisfied. Osterhaus missed out on several recently discovered fatal viruses–such as the Nipah virus from Malaysia–because he doesn’t have a biosafety level 4 lab, the multimillion-dollar pressure-controlled facilities where scientists work in space suits. He wants the medical center to help him build one, and with all the money he’s bringing in, he reckons they owe him. “I simply need it,” he says. “Otherwise I can’t move ahead.” Some colleagues, especially in the small world of Dutch virology, charge that Osterhaus is a scientific stamp collector. But others say such complaints are motivated by professional envy. “I think he’s the best and most fun researcher we have in Holland,” says virologist Jaap Goudsmit, chief scientific officer of Crucell, a Dutch biotech.

Verder wil Kroes weten waarom er volgens haar te weinig ‘generieke’ medicijnen op de markt verschijnen. Dit zijn middelen die worden gemaakt door een bedrijf dat niet verantwoordelijk is voor de ontwikkeling ervan. Kroes vermoedt dat bedrijven patenten misbruiken om deze goedkopere alternatieven van de markt te weren. Ze verwees daarbij naar de zaak tegen het Brits-Zweedse bedrijf AstraZeneca. Dat kreeg in 2005 een boete van 60 miljoen euro omdat het jarenlang misleidende patiëntinformatie had verschaft over een medicijn tegen kanker. Ook AstraZeneca heeft bevestigd bezoek te hebben gehad van inspecteurs.

Rethinking Influenza

Today, we are better prepared to face the H1N1 influenza A 2009 virus than we were for any other previous pandemic. Although the present manufacturing capacity is unlikely to have all the vaccines needed before the peak of the next wave of cases, the potential output of vaccine manufacturing has increased from 400 to 900 million (1). A vaccine will be produced in Europe with modern cell culture technology instead of eggs. A large facility for cell culture production under construction in the United States is expected to improve the current limited production capacity. Although vaccines against avian H5N1 are not highly immunogenic, this shortcoming can be overcome by using adjuvants or reverting to using whole-virus vaccines (2–5).

Belangenverstrengeling
De discussie wordt geopend door voorzitter David Gilbert (Engeland), die uitlegt waarom de kwestie van sponsoring van de gezondheidszorg door de farmaceutische industrie aan de meest wezenlijke aspecten van ons mens-zijn raakt: “Het gaat over gezondheid, waar wij ons allen sterk voor maken. Het gaat over geld, wat voor de meesten van ons ook een belangrijk onderwerp is. En het gaat over relaties: hoe voel je je als je geld van je vrienden aanneemt, of van je ouders? Het is niet helemaal sex, drugs en rock ‘n roll, maar het komt wel aardig in de richting.”
Gilbert stelt dat in Engeland 50% van al het medisch-wetenschappelijk onderzoek betaald wordt door de farmaceutische industrie. Hij meent dat, met de toenemende zorg om geld in de GGz, sponsoring beschouwd kan worden als een pil, een remedie voor chronisch geldgebrek. De vraag, zo zegt hij, is dan hetzelfde als bij elk medicijngebruik: “Kan deze pil op verstandige wijze worden gebruikt? Wat de voordelen van sponsoring zijn is wel duidelijk (namelijk geld), maar wat zijn de nadelen?”.
Een eerste antwoord op deze vraag werd aangereikt door Charles Medawar (Engeland), die de ontwikkelingen van de farmaceutische industrie sinds 20 jaar kritisch volgt. Volgens Medawar vormt sponsoring een regelrechte bedreiging voor de democratie. Hij noemde het voorbeeld van de World Health Organization (WHO), die voor 70% van haar inkomsten afhankelijk is van de farmaceutische industrie.
Terwijl de WHO geacht wordt op mondiaal niveau onafhankelijk de criteria voor verschillende stoornissen vast te stellen en beleid daaromtrent te bepalen, wordt in de zogenaamde consensusforums doorgaans zitting genomen door personen van wie connectie met de farmaceutische industrie bekend is. Als een desastreus gevolg van dergelijke belangenverstrengeling noemt hij de voortdurende uitbreiding en nivellering van de diagnose ‘depressie’, waarvoor inmiddels meer dan 100 omschrijvingen bestaan. De implicatie hiervan is, volgens Medawar, duidelijk: door via de consensusforums het begrip depressie op te rekken, wordt de groep depressieven kunstmatig vergroot en de afzetmarkt voor anti-depressiva uitgebreid. Het door sponsoring ‘kopen van stemmen’ in de forums bedreigt de kritische en onafhankelijke positie van de WHO en maakt een democratisch beslissingsproces onmogelijk. Hierdoor ontstaat een situatie waarbij ‘de staart met de hond kwispelt’.

Ik heb de lijst van 13 belangenverstrengelingen doorgemailed aan een aantal goede politici.Die kunnen ze dan gebruiken om Osterhaus tijdens het spoeddebat van komende week in de tweede Kamer publiekelijk te ontmaskeren.
Ik heb ze ook aangeraden de gehele gezondheidsraad door te lichten op belangenverstrengeling. Daarbij heb ik in het bijzonder gevraagd naar doorlichting van leden van de Conmmisie Elektromagnetische Velden
met name in relatie tot banden met telecom en farmacie.
Dit als versterking van het ontbindingsverzoek van de Comnmissie van Elektromagnetische Velden dat recentelijk door rechtspraktijk BAWA is ingediend (zie bericht op http://www.stopumtws.nl) en dat binnenkort behandeld zal worden door de vaste 2e kamer Commisie van Volkgsgezondheid, Welzijn en Sport.
Zo kan ook het stralingsbedrog binnenkort onthuld worden dat Nederland dreigt te veranderen in een land van maximale carcinogene elektrosmog.
Techneutenvisie van de Elektromagnetische Veldencommisie is gebaseerd op junk science en de geheel onverantwoordelijk ICNIRP-prietpraat van deze mensen lijkt op die van ‘Neanderthalers die rondstampen in de porceleinkast’!

Alleen .. bij “doorgemailed aan goede politici” ben ik bijna opgehouden met lezen.
Kunnen dit soort dingen buiten het verhaal gehouden. Het doet afbreuk doet aan de geloofwaardigheid van een boodschap die je zo sterk mogelijk wilt, eh, uitstralen.
